911 Targa 4/4S reviving a legacy!

Way back in 1965 Porsche AG introduced the 911 ‘Targa’, which was slightly different compared to the conventional convertible top. At that time, the Department of highway safety was considering a ban on convertible vehicles due to occupant’s safety in the case of a rollover. Porsche set out to create essentially a coupe with a removable roof. It encompasses a rear glass connected to a metal Targa band, thus creating a sturdy wind-deflecting fixture. It was a revolutionary concept that set a trend throughout the automotive world, the likes of Ferrari and Pontiac amongst many others began offering Targa top options to their flagship models.

Porsche is now reviving the once discontinued targa namesake and giving it a whole new design. The new targa will be applied to the 911 4/4S models. The old targa featured a sliding glass roof at the touch of a button. This new design shows the back windshield opens up, seemingly swallowing the top canopy and returns to open top configuration. Something out of an episode of Dexters lab!

Apart from the new Porsche 991 GT3/Turbo lines which are absolutely incredible in their own respects, Porsche AG has now dished out the Targa 4/4S, another significant addition to their flagship line up. Since the 991 generation was introduced in 2011, Porsche has really set out to prove that they can and will push the benchmark of fine engineering and craftsmanship, and refuse to let up on the pressure they put on their Italian rivals.

Since the Targa will be appended to the 4 and 4S models, both models will have a wider rear track stance and body, and have an AWD Porsche Traction Management system. We can expect the horsepower for the entry level 4 to be rated at 350bhp, matted to a 3.4-liter flat-six engine, allowing the car to max out around 175 miles per hour and a 0-to-60 run of just 4.6 seconds. On the other hand the Targa 4S has 400bhp from a 3.8-liter boxer-six, the 4S runs to 60 in just 4.2 seconds and has a track speed of 183 mph. Porsche is asking $101,600 for the Targa 4 and $116,200 for the 4S
